Preserving, promoting and celebrating the rich culture, arts, traditions, norms and values of the Magar community while fostering unity and cultural awareness for future generations.
FOUNDING OF MAGAR SOCIETY OF OHIO, USA
In early 2012, during the initial stage of Bhutanese refugee resettlement in the United States, Man Rana lost his father in another state. Having been recently resettled in Akron, Ohio, and due to weather conditions and limited resources, he and his family were unable to travel to pay their final respects.
In Magar culture, the loss of a parent involves specific mourning rituals that require the presence of biological sons and daughters, their families, siblings, and extended relatives, along with support from the Magar community and neighbors, for a designated period of time. At that time, there were only seven other Magar households in Akron: Purna Mongar, Arjun Balampaki, Khamba Magar, Chandra Pulami, Saujal Sarbuja, Padam Mangar, and Kumar Monger.
During this difficult period, these Magar community members came together to support Man Rana and his family, helping them complete the traditional mourning rituals according to Magar culture. This collective act of compassion and unity highlighted the strength and importance of community support.
Following this experience, ALL the Magar community members decided to form an informal community organization to support Magar families during such times of need. This group was named the Akron Magar Community.
As time passed, more Magar families were resettled and migrated to the greater Akron area. With the growing community and expanding activities, the organization was later formally registered in the State of Ohio as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, laying the foundation for what continues today as a united and supportive Magar community.
