MAGHE SANKRANTI CELEBRATION
Maghe Sankranti is one of the major festivals of the Magar people, celebrated on Magh 1st according to the Nepali calendar, which falls around mid-January. This festival is a vibrant expression of Magar culture, tradition, and community spirit.
At the Magar Society of Ohio, we celebrate Maghe Sankranti with:
-
Cultural performances: Traditional Magar and Nepali songs and dances that showcase our heritage
-
Games and traditions for seniors: Seniors are given the special privilege to play the magnetic dart board game, a symbolic adaptation of traditional Magar sports
-
Historical context: Traditionally, Magar people celebrated this day with short-put throwing, archery, and marathon races. Historically, the king of the Magar kingdom was appointed based on the winner of the marathon.
Given the weather conditions in January, we adapt the tradition safely by allowing seniors to participate in the magnetic dart board game. The winner is honored as the “king” for that year, purely as a symbolic gesture, keeping the spirit of the old customs alive.
Maghe Sankranti at MSO is a time for unity, celebration, and cultural pride, connecting generations through shared traditions and joyous festivities.
